98 Degrees
The Collection
The group's lush, smooth harmonies made them a veritable hit machine, and THE COLLECTION attests to their staying power in both the pop charts and the collective pop culture consciousness. They've managed to stay ahead of the curve by staying close to their R&B roots; from "Why (Are We Still Friends)" to "This Gift," the songs here stick pretty close to the simmering, slow jam mode that is at the heart of the group's appeal. In fact, one of the most uptempo tracks is saved for the very end, as the lads launch into the percolating "True to Your Heart" with a vocal assist from no less a personage than Stevie Wonder (the R&B legend also contributes some of his trademark chromatic harmonica work). If that kind of endorsement isn't enough for you, then nothing more can be done. |

Revelation
In the wake of the late-'90s Latin pop explosion, one can hardly fault the quartet for opening REVELATION with the Latin-flavored "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)," and for four guys from Ohio, they pull it off pretty convincingly. From there on, however, the group doesn't let stylistic experimentation get in the way of their main goal, which of course, is traveling straight into the hearts of young girls worldwide. With their achingly romantic crooning, and their poignant, cinematic arrangements replete with limpid piano, gentle rhythmic syncopation and cooing harmonies, they should have little trouble achieving their goal. Sure, REVELATION has its uptempo, danceable moments, such as the funky "Dizzy" and the aforementioned opening cut, but for the most part, unabashed romanticism is the order of the day here. |

98 Degrees and Rising
This harmony-driven Ohio foursome's sophomore release finds brothers Nick and Drew Lachey, Justin Jeffre and Jeff Timmons collaborating with some of the day's hottest producers. The Trackmasters-produced "Do You Wanna Dance" uses a sample from Kool & The Gang's classic "Get Down On It." Keith Thomas and Anders Bagge also worked on tracks that range from hip-hop-flavored R&B to pop and Eurodance styles. Love songs are numerous on this release, including a remake of "I Do (Cherish You)," originally recorded by country singer Mark Wills. Producers Sean Hosein & Dane Denviller co-wrote the acoustic guitar-accented "Still." The maturity of the groups shines through on their second album on tracks like "Because Of You," "Heat It Up" and 'True To Your Heart," which features an appearance from Stevie Wonder. |
